RALEIGH LESLIE

Codeable's Marketing Manager

Raleigh Leslie

I was able to get to know Raleigh and learn of his passion for his job. He is a young web developer who now works with partnerships and giving the best customer service that he can. Get to know Raleigh and about his company that he loves very much.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Raleigh Leslie, I grew up in a small city named Gig Harbor, WA which is South of Seattle. In my spare time I like to stay active and in the winter I go snowboarding a lot and in the summers I enjoy cycling, both mountain and road, and skateboarding. For the last year, I’ve been traveling and converting a sprinter-style van that I live in and work remotely from.

Tell me about Codeable, and how long you have worked there?

Codeable is the only WordPress exclusive freelancer platform that connects thousands of customers — from freelancers and business owners to big agencies — with the top WordPress freelance developers to work on projects of any size.

For me, what makes Codeable so special is the community, and the focus on quality and customer service, which is greatly lacking from other freelance platforms.

I was accepted as a developer on Codeable on May 7th 2015, it was a life changing day. I’ve been with the company for 4 years now. I become more of an advocate for Codeable everyday as it’s truly a very special community backed by a genuine company I stand proudly behind.

What drew you to web developing?

I grew up as the neighborhood kid who was always getting called over to friends and neighbors houses to fix their technology, I’ve always been good with computers and troubleshooting. I was into computer games (Counter-Strike if you must know) and that pushed me at a young age to learn even more about computers, servers, design, websites (Geocities at the time), and online communities. Fast forward to college and I earned a degree in Graphic Design because I wanted to not only be able to bring designs to life on the web, but also build websites that looked and performed great too. I remember buying a book on Adobe Dreamweaver before learning about and falling in love with WordPress as my CMS of choice, that was over 10 years ago.

What is your main job at Codeable?

Partnerships. I worked as an expert(developer) on Codeable for about a year, before being hired in-house to work on the amazing support team for another year or so. I then transitioned into a sales and marketing role, before discovering the opportunity for driving new and existing partnerships at Codeable where I’ve been focused the past year, and it’s been going really well. I have a few funny titles given by our CEO to me but my favorite is The Bird Phoenix and I have a purpose of bringing Codeable to the people.

How do you go about partnering with someone? What do you look for?

At Codeable we solve a major problem for our partners by being a reliable place they can confidently recommend to their users with development related needs that fall outside the scope of service and support they offer. But by no means is that all we can give our partners.

We are looking for WordPress focused companies who share our vision of a quality-first approach. Most commonly these are hosting companies and WordPress theme and plugin publishers but also agencies of all types. Codeable provides an avenue of hope for the users, support teams, and companies resulting in more people getting the quality help they need.

How do you gain and keep relationships in this business?

It’s all about relationships, and taking things slow to make sure take the right steps to set things up right for success in working together and helping each other. I feel many people get this wrong by either rushing into big things or are always too focused on what you can get out of your partner instead of what you can give them.

Since I’ve started in partnerships at Codeable I’ve always focused first and foremost on what we can give our partners before obligating them to give or commit to anything. We give, you give, we grow together.

Successful business relationships are very similar to personal relationships in this way. Keeping relationships is about always-open transparent communication. Should any issues arise always give your partner the benefit of the doubt and always do your best to help make right.

What is something that you love about your job?

Growing the company, which benefits the entire community of people like me and the people they serve. As a developer I could only help a handful of clients at a time. As an advocate for Codeable I can make bigger partnerships that connect thousands of fruitful business relationships every month. Making that positive connection with the client saves them from a long risky process when trying to hire a reliable freelancer outside Codeable who will deliver. I know every Codeable vetted expert is going to deliver with the same quality I would when I was completing client work as an expert on Codeable. Through growing Codeable I’m putting better food on the table and enabling better holidays for everyone Codeable touches because I see it throughout the community and in my own life. I believe Codeable is making a better name and reputation for WordPress developers, freelancers and agencies alike.

If someone was interested in what you do, what advice would you give them to help them along the way?

Gain the right kinds of experience. Focus on helping people in the most leveraged way you can. Give first, but don’t hesitate to ask as well. Only commit when you are sure you can deliver.

Read business books, a couple I recommend are: The Win Without Pitching Manifesto and The Go Giver https://thegogiver.com/

And if you fall, pick yourself up and learn from it. I admire skateboarders in this regard too and this TED Talk by Rodney Mullen speaks well to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBbmNAZWq-E

What lessons have you learned or knowledge have you gained throughout your career that you can pass on?

When I was a kid I wanted to work from my laptop computer from anywhere, that was my goal. I hit that goal, to later figure out it’s really all about freedom of your time to give your life outside work the priority it deserves. I consider myself very passionate about my work, but I share that same passion for escaping my computer and being outside chasing my other hobbies with friends and family.

As a 32 year old, I’ve realized your health is the most important thing you need to prioritize first. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, relationships, hobbies are all required for a successful career and good health. I say this because without your health you have nothing.

I’m thankful for the point I’m at in my career working remotely for a company is enabling me to live the lifestyle I’ve chosen. Look for a job that allows you to chase your passions also and you will be more happy.

Raleigh is someone that has so much passion and focus in his career. He is someone that can help if you are looking to partner with Codeable. Thanks again for answering these questions and for letting us get to know you a little better!
